TASK #4 - Into The Future

THE WORLD IS CHANGING AND EVOLVING, YES, BUT NOT AS QUICKLY AS THE MOVIES SUGGEST.

Back in the 90's, people and specially movie makers were obsessed with the future. Plenty of the movies that were released during that decade, depicted a pretty inventive idea of what the future would look like. We're talking about fax machine mailboxes, flying cars, moon colonies, and, yes, hoverboards. Some of those crazy ideas were a hit (drones, big screen TVs and hoverboards?), but some others were a miss.

1. Diners will include workout bikes.

In Back To The Future (1985) they thought it made sense for a hip retro cafe to include exercise bikes for diners to pedal on while they ate.

2. Everyone will travel on hoverboards.

It was in the same movie that they predicted everyone would travel on hoverboards in the future. They weren't quite wrong. Companies like Lexus are trying to develop their own models — and HUVr has a prototype that may be the answer! But for now, floating skateboards are still the stuff of the future.

3. We will colonize the moon by 2001.

The makers of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) were pretty sure of this one. But by 2001, we still hadn't colonized the moon, created a space station for civilians, or discovered alien artifacts. Wrong guess!

4. Time travel will be common by 2004.

In the 1994 sci-fi film Timecop, Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a cop who time travels, a traveling method that had become common by 2004. Not really, though...

5. Cars will fly before 2019.

In movies like Blade Runner (1982), The Fifth Element (1997) or Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002) were a little off about flying cars.  No flying cars here. We still have to take the bus.

Assignment:

Think about what the world will look like 20, 30, 40 or 50 years from now. How will it be different? Make a guess! Write a 10-15 line piece about what you think the future will look like. You're making predictions, you have no proof, so be sure to use the future simple: will/won't.
